QB Johnson a game-time decision
BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic won’t announce its starting quarterback until moments before Saturday’s game against Buffalo.
Coach Charlie Partridge said quarterback Jaquez Johnson will be a game-time decision after sustaining an ankle injury in Friday night’s loss to the University of Miami. As of Monday, Johnson was still wearing a protective walking boot.
With Johnson limited in practice, the Owls will at least begin the practice week with backup Jason Driskel as the starter.
“He is [the starter] at this point, but ’Quez will be a game-time decision as we get closer to the game,” Partridge said.
Johnson was injured in the first quarter against the Hurricanes, giving Driskel the opportunity to make his collegiate debut. In relief, Driskel, a redshirt freshman, completed 17 of 30 passes for 155 yards and had the Owls tied at 20 early in the third quarter before faltering late.
“It says a lot about him and [offensive coordinator Brian Wright] that those two worked together in terms of Driskel being prepared,” Partridge said.
Partridge also listed running back Jay Warren as a game-time decision. Warren left Friday’s game after a big collision in the first half. “We will evaluate them daily,” Partridge said.
