Turtles begin nesting
Gumbo Limbo Nature Center offers public walks to see loggerheads through July 14
BOCA RATON — Local marine conservationists say at least one loggerhead sea turtle has ventured onto Boca’s beach this year, which means sea turtle nesting season is in full swing and it’s time to register for a turtlesighting tour.
The first loggerhead sea turtle of the year has ventured onto Boca’s beach, which means sea turtle nesting season is in full swing and it’s time to register for a turtlesighting tour.
Starting in May each year, hundreds of loggerhead sea turtles nest on the beaches. Last year, the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center saw 718 nests in Boca during the season, which ends Oct. 31, said Kirt Rusenko, a marine conservationist with the center.
The center is offering “Turtle Walks” May 19, 26 and 31, and every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night from June 1 through July 14.
The educational program will begin in the center’s classroom, followed by an ecology walk along the beach. Seeing a loggerhead turtle is the goal, though it’s not guaranteed.
Doors open at 8:30 p.m., and the program will start promptly at 8:45 p.m. The program ends after one loggerhead is seen or at midnight, whichever comes first.
Children must be at least 8 years old to participate. Minors under the age of 18 must attend with an adult.
Reservations cost $17 per person and go on sale at 9 a.m. Monday. Reservations are limited to six per purchase and must be made in advance. Attendees must bring their email confirmations with them the night of the program.
