Help make our roads safer

- Glenn Topping, Deerfield Beach Laurence Levine, Pembroke Pines Jonathan Abramson, Coconut Creek

Why is there such a disregard for our traffic laws? They include speeders, those who fail to yield, texters, Pokemon Go getters, those who don’t ever use turn signals and those who never turn them off. We’re a society of envelope pushers, until the police stop us. Then the police become the bad guys.

No one likes to donate money to the state with a citation, so obey the traffic laws and you may survive the mean streets of South Florida. Remember, it’s all fun and games until you see those pretty blue lights behind you.

Beyond just ‘getting caught’

Since when is “getting caught” the crime. President Eisenhower said our elected leaders should be judged by four qualities: Character, ability, responsibility and experience. Note that he placed character first.

A member of Congress has egregiously failed all four, embarrassed her party, her constituents and her family. A resignation from the party chairmanship also demands a resignation from Congress. Where is that demand?

To continue to represent those who were scorned should not be allowed. “It has always been done” is not a mantra for rationalizing dishonesty. Perhaps a return to Ike’s simple tenets is what is necessary, not just in one district but the entire nation.

Trump should scare you

For many years the Republican voters have said the government is too big and too intrusive in our lives. I am one of those Republicans.

Then you have Donald Trump’s speech where he remarks how scary the world is and he alone can fix it. Only he can protect you. He alone as president can protect you. Before I say anything else on this, do a little research. Google “how do dictatorships start.”

Be informed people, not afraid. When someone says they will vanquish those who dare speak or show they are against them by ruining them with his financial or other power, or when someone takes advantage of the people’s fear and tries to convince you that they are only one who can resolve them, those are some of the scariest words a leader can speak.
