Garage for high-speed rail station taking shape

- By Wayne K. Roustan

FORT LAUDERDALE — Construction is underway on a sevenstory, 576-vehicle parking garage next to the Brightline high-speed rail station.

It’s the second city to start garage construction; It began in Miami last fall, with work scheduled to begin in West Palm Beach in the near future, said spokeswoman Ali Soule.

The downtown Fort Lauderdale garage, which will have shops on the ground floor, is located on Northwest Fourth Avenue, about a block north of Broward Boulevard. It offers access to the train station, the Broward County Transit bus terminal, the Sun Trolley, and the proposed WAVE Streetcar.

In West Palm Beach, there are plans for a garage with nearly 800 parking spaces for Brightline passengers and a planned residential complex. It will be nestled between South Rosemary Avenue and South Quadrille Boulevard near Evernia Street.

There will be connections with Palm Tran, Tri-Rail, Brightline Shuttles and Sun Trolley.

The Miami station, which stretches from Northwest Third to Eighth streets, will be flanked by a high rise-office building and two apartment towers.

“The construction is well underway on the MiamiCentral station and also at 3 MiamiCentral, where Brightline’s headquarters will be located,” Soule said.

All train station and garage construction is scheduled to be finished before the summer of 2017, when Brightline begins running between Miami and West Palm Beach.
