Suspect in violent rapes on trial

- By Chuck Weber

At times fighting tears, a woman testified Tuesday about the night she says she was raped.

She testified against Baltazar Delgado Ros, 30, whose trial in Palm Beach County this week pertains to the first of five rape cases he’s charged with.

The attacks happened between April 2009 and September 2011. The first occurred in Jupiter and the rest happened in central Palm Beach County, including Lake Worth and Palm Springs, authorities said.

Palm Beach sheriff ’s detectives say Delgado repeatedly beat his victims, and even bit off parts of victims’ bodies. One woman was left with a disfigured face, another suffered bleeding on the brain.

The woman who authorities say was attacked in Palm Springs said a man suddenly appeared by her bed in the middle of the night at her home. She said he repeatedly threatened to kill her, and cut her multiple times with a sharp object. She testified that as the man held the object to her neck, he raped her.

With her mother and 2-year-old daughter also home at the time, the woman said she obeyed the attacker’s demands.

Sun Sentinel news partner, WPEC-Ch. 12, isn’t identifying the woman due to the nature of the case.

Detectives say a break in the case came when Delgado left sneakers at the last place he stayed, before moving back to Guatemala. The Sheriff ’s Office says DNA from the shoes matched all five rapes.

In 2014, Delgado was extradited from Guatemala to face charges. In the current case, Delgado faces a minimum of 25 years up to life in prison.
