Woman dies after stolen sedan strikes Mercedes, cops say; 5 injured include her son, 11
A woman died after her Mercedes-Benz was struck by a stolen Toyota sedan that ran a red light while speeding away from police Tuesday morning, Coral Springs police said.
Eric Abraham, 17, of Fort Lauderdale, was driving a 2015 Toyota Corolla that had been reported stolen in Miami Gardens when the crash occurred at the intersection of West Sample Road and Northwest 101st Avenue, Detective Ernesto Bruna said.
The other driver, Christianne Weiner, 53, of Parkland, died shortly after in the emergency room at Broward Health North. Her 11-year-old son, who had been riding with her in the Mercedes, was flown to Broward Health Medical Center. His injuries were not life threatening, Bruna said.
The investigation began when a license plate recognition camera in the 12600 block of West Sample Road alerted police that the Toyota had a stolen tag from Fort Lauderdale, Bruna said.
“Our officers spotted the vehicle going east around Coral Springs Drive and Sample Road,” Bruna said. “Our officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it failed to stop and started going at a high rate of speed on Sample Road, still traveling eastbound.
“Unfortunately it ran the red light ... and struck the Mercedes, which was going northbound...and had the green light.”
The Coral Springs Fire Department took Abraham and his three passengers to Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, Division Chief Michael Moser said. All were in serious condition.
Two of the passengers riding with Abraham are juveniles. The third passenger was identified as Tyree Goodwin, 18, of Fort Lauderdale, Bruna said.
Abraham is being charged with vehicular homicide; four counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding causing serious bodily injury or death; four counts of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury or death; fourt counts of driving without a license causing serious bodily injury or death; and possession of a stolen vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing and it is not yet known whether anyone else will face criminal charges, Bruna said.
Authorities ask anyone with information regarding the incident to call Officer Derek Fernandes at 954-346-1754.
