Motorcyclist killed in New Year’s crash was youth pastor and carpenter
Funeral services have been scheduled for Wayne Wilson, a youth pastor and carpenter who was killed in an early morning motorcycle crash on New Year’s Day in Pompano Beach.
Wilson, 39, of Coconut Creek was riding a Harley-Davidson south on Northeast Fourth Avenue about 3 a.m. when he and another motorcyclist crashed near the intersection at Northeast 24th Street in Pompano Beach, according to authorities.
Broward sheriff ’s detectives suspect Wilson and Scott W. Miessau were racing before their motorcycles crossed the intersection, went through a fence and struck a wall, said Joy Oglesby, department spokeswoman.
Jennifer Wilson said her husband worked as a carpenter at Merritt Boat & Engine Works in Pompano and served as a youth pastor with Coastal Community Church.
A native of Bradenton, Wilson started riding a motorcycle only a few months ago, she said.
“He was a great employee, well-liked and respected,” said John Skubal, Wilson’s supervisor at Merritt. Wilson joined the company about three years ago and worked on high-end fishing boats, Skubal said.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue took the men to Broward Health North, where Wilson was pronounced dead, Oglesby said.
Miessau, 23, of Fort Lauderdale suffered serious injuries.
In addition to his wife, Wilson is survived by children Willis, 15, and Hailey, 13.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Jan. 14 at Kraeer Funeral Home, One N. State Road 7, Margate. Viewing begins at 11 a.m.
