Scare during Georgetown bus trip
Georgetown’s men’s basketball team was involved in a crash Monday while traveling to Pennsylvania to play Villanova.
The traffic accident occurred on I-95 North outside of Baltimore. There were no major injuries to any members of the team.
The Georgetown bus collided with a Lexus SUV that was driving ahead of it.
“It was a harrowing experience,” Hoyas coach John Thompson III said. “It was very, very, very scary.”
“I don’t know what happened,” Thompson said. “There’s bodies flying everywhere. I saw the car go rolling to the side. It rolled at least four or five times. You’re sitting there holding on. I thought we were going to hit another car . ... It seemed like something out of an action movie, just a car rolling down the highway.”
Once the players gathered themselves, they got off the bus and helped the 49-year-old woman and her 17-year-old son who were in the SUV.
The passengers from the SUV were transported to Harbor Hospital in Baltimore but were not admitted, according to a hospital spokesperson.
According to the school, the bus company provided another bus for the Hoyas to continue their trip for Tuesday night’s game against No. 2 Villanova.
“I can honestly say that as bad as it was, God was there, because no one was seriously injured to my knowledge,” Thompson said.
Maryland falls:
Lamar Stevens scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half as host Penn State beat No. 21 Maryland 70-64.
Tony Carr added 14 points for the Nittany Lions (13-12, 5-7 Big Ten), who snapped a two-game skid.
Justin Jackson and Kevin Huerter scored 12 points each for the Terrapins (20-4, 8-3) who lost their second straight.
The Nittany Lions played stingy defense early and led for all but 1:48 and by as many as 14 points with 9:59 remaining.
The Terps cut the lead to 62-58 with 3:26 left after Jackson and Jaylen Brantley hit consecutive 3s. But a layup from Nazeer Bostick and six combined free throws from Carr, Stevens and Josh Reaves kept the game out of reach.
