THURSDAY’S ROUNDUP

-

EAST Virginia 76, UNC Wilmington 71:

London Perrantes scored 24 points and Marial Shayok added a careerhigh 23 off the bench as the No. 5 seed Cavaliers (23-10) rallied from 15 points down to beat the 12th-seeded Seahawks.

Perrantes scored 19 points in the second half as Virginia got its slowpaced offense going. His driving bank shot with 1 minute, 37 seconds remaining put the Cavs up 71-66.

The Seahawks (29-6) wouldn’t go away, though. Chris Flemmings drained a 3-pointer and then Devontae Cacok hit a layup to make it 73-71 with less than a minute to play. But Shayok answered on the other end, banking in a runner.

Florida 80, E. Tennessee St. 65:

Devin Robinson tied his career high with 24 points and Kasey Hill added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists as the No. 4 seed Gators (25-8) used a second-half surge to beat the 13th-seeded Buccaneers.

Robinson scored his most points in nearly two months. He made 10 of 17 shots and chipped in seven rebounds.

T.J. Cromer led the Buccaneers (27-8) with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting.

Villanova 76, Mt. St. Mary’s 56:

Donte DiVincenzo scored 21 points as the overall top seed Wildcats (32-3) shook off a slow start.

SOUTH Butler 76, Winthrop 64:

Avery Woodson scored 18 points and tied a career high with six 3-pointers in his tourney debut, and the fourth-seeded Bulldogs (24-8) contained star guard Keon Johnson in a 76-64 win over the 13th-seeded Eagles.

Woodson, a graduate transfer from Memphis, hit five 3s in the first half to help Butler build a 14-point halftime lead.

Xavier Cooks had 23 points to lead the Eagles (26-7).

Middle Tenn. 81, Minnesota 72:

Reggie Upshaw scored 19 points and Giddy Potts added 15 as the 12thseeded Blue Raiders (31-4) took down another Big Ten team in the NCAA tournament, beating the Gophers a year after upsetting Michigan State as a No. 15 seed last March.

Amir Coffey had 17 points to lead the Gophers (24-10).

WEST Notre Dame 60, Princeton 58:

Bonzie Colson scored 18 points as the fifth-seeded Fighting Irish (26-9) avoided a meltdown in the final two minutes to hold off the 12th-seeded Tigers.

After Notre Dame’s Matt Farrell missed the front end of a one-andone with a 59-58 lead, Princeton had a chance to win, but Devin Cannady missed an open 3-pointer.

Spencer Weisz’s 15 points led the Tigers (23-7), whose 19-game winning streak ended.

West Virginia 86, Bucknell 80:

Nathan Adrian had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Tarik Phillip scored 16 points as the fourth-seeded Mountaineers held off the Bison.

Gonzaga 66, S. Dakota St. 46:

Jordan Mathews scored 16 points to help the top-seeded Bulldogs (33-1) slowly pull away from the Jackrabbits, who led for most of the first half.

The Jackrabbits (18-17), champions of the Summit League, led for the first 17 minutes of the game. Mike Daum, the nation’s second-leading scorer, finished with 17 points, more than eight fewer than his average.

Northwestern 68, Vanderbilt 66:

Bryant McIntosh had 25 points and scored the go-ahead points from the free-throw line with 14.6 seconds left after an inexplicable foul as the No. 8 seed Wildcats (24-11) recorded their first-ever NCAA tournament victory.

After the Commodores (19-16) rallied from down 15 to take a one-point lead with 17.8 seconds left, Matthew Fisher-Davis, thinking his team was still trailing, reached out and grabbed McIntosh while he was in the backcourt.

Xavier 76, Maryland 65:

Trevon Bluiett scored 21 points and Sean O’Mara had 18 as the No. 11 seed Musketeers (22-13) upset the sixthseeded Terrapins (24-9), who lost in their tournament opener for the first time since 1997.
