Rapper cleared in weapons case
The next time rap artist Tory Lanez gets behind the wheel of a car that a member of his entourage has borrowed, he might want to check the glove compartment and center console.
Wednesday, the 24-year-old was cleared of the most serious charge against him stemming from a traffic stop in Miramar on April 12 — carrying a concealed weapon without a license.
He still faces three charges, including misdemeanor drug possession.
“The stuff wasn’t his, he carries an entourage and people leave their stuff … my client isn’t a drug or gun guy, that’s not what he is about,” said Jim Lewis, Lanez’s attorney, in a phone call Friday.
The gun charge was the only felony, carrying a penalty of up to five years in prison. What’s significant is that it could have complicated Lanez’s status in the U.S. — he is originally from Ontario, Canada, and lives in Pembroke Pines. He is scheduled to begin a 15-state tour that will also include three Canadian provinces.
“We were lucky enough that the charge was dropped, so there shouldn’t be any issue,” said Lewis, who is now setting his sights on getting the drug charge dismissed on the same argument.
Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Shemuel Peterson, was driving a 2014 Rolls-Royce when police stopped him near Memorial Hospital Miramar, 1901 SW 172nd Ave.
