Carjacking and chase land suspect in jail

- By Doug Phillips Staff writer Sun Sentinel researcher Barbara Hijek contributed to this report.

It seems Ryan Pearson was determined to grab a ride and get going.

Pearson, 31, first stopped a man near the 1600 block of South Andrews Avenue about 2:15 p.m. Thursday, grabbing his shoulder from behind and implying he had a gun, Fort Lauderdale police said. The accosted man got scared, ran away and called for help.

Minutes later, Pearson went up to two women getting out of a Nissan Armada, again implying he had a gun, and demanded their cellphones and the keys to the SUV, according to police. He took off in the SUV.

It didn’t take long for police to notice the stolen Nissan and try to pull it over.

“The suspect refused to stop the vehicle, fleeing from police, disobeying numerous traffic laws and initiating a police pursuit,” Detective Tracy Figone said.

Sirens blared and lights were flashing with numerous police cars in pursuit when Pearson bailed from the SUV near the 6200 block of North Andrews Avenue and tried to run away. He was quickly apprehended, police said.

Pearson was booked into Broward’s jail on charges that include armed carjacking, robbery with a firearm and aggravated fleeing, records show.

He has previous arrests on charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement Records.

During a court hearing Friday, Pearson was ordered to remain in jail without bond.
