Bobcats win 1st district title
Tianga leads route with 3 touchdowns
COOPER CITY — For West Broward, it was all worth the wait.
The Bobcats, needing two district wins within a week to determine their playoff fate, had games against Nova and Cooper City postponed — Nova rescheduled from last Tuesday to Wednesday and Cooper City played Monday after it was originally set for Saturday.
Once the results for both were complete, West Broward clinched the school’s first district title.
Behind 371 total rushing yards, and three touchdowns from junior Dominic Tianga, the Bobcats claimed the District 15-7A crown with a 54-21 victory at Cooper City on Monday night in a game postponed from Saturday due to weather.
The Bobcats (6-2, 4-1) ran their single-wing offense to perfection. Tianga ran for 155 yards, senior Eric Hoff went for 101 and junior Jason Montes De Oca added 80. Hoff and Montes De Oca each scored two touchdowns apiece.
West Broward got into the end zone on all five firsthalf possessions to lead, 33-7, at the half. The Bobcats scored twice in the final two minutes before intermission, recovering a fumble on the kickoff between touchdowns for Montes De Oca and Tianga.
Hoff scored from 17 and 38 yards out in the first half. Montes De Oca’s first touchdown went for 22 yards on a third-and-21 when a holding call wiped away a score that would’ve gone to Hoff.
Had Cooper City beaten West Broward on Monday, Nova, which had its own shot at the Bobcats and the district championship outright last Wednesday, would’ve come away with the crown.
While Nova (7-1) misses out on the district title, the Titans are still in line to make the postseason as a regional wild card. After the Bobcats won their regular season meeting, 42-16, Nova and West Broward could possibly have a regional quarterfinal rematch.
Cooper City (4-5) is unlikely to make the postseason as a wild card.
