It’s cold here, but it snowed in N. Florida

- Staff and wire reports

Winter has arrived in Florida, but the temperatures are expected to warm up slightly this week.

South Florida residents woke up Sunday to temperatures in the mid to upper 40s, the coldest weather here since January 2016. Fort Lauderdale set a record with a high of 59, the National Weather Service said. The record low high was 61 in 1981.

But there could be more bouts of especially cold weather this winter, said Chris Fisher, a forecaster with the weather service.

“We usually see this at least a few times a year,” Fisher said, citing a cold front that brought temperatures down in recent days. “It’s not that uncommon.”

But over all, the weather service predicts this winter to be warmer than previous years, Fisher said.

In northwest Florida, residents woke up to a sprinkling of snow. The news website northescambia.com posted a photograph of the sign that welcomes travelers to the state, covered in a sprinkle of snow.

Flurries were reported in Destin and Miramar Beach, while temperatures in St. Petersburg were 48 degrees. Miami was a positively chilly 61 degrees Sunday afternoon.

That’s about 10 to 15 degrees lower than the average temperature for this time of year.

Sunday night was forecast to be the coldest night. The temperature was expected to drop down into the 40s.

Today is expected to be slightly warmer, with highs of about 70 across the metro areas in South Florida.
