State teams get selected.
Florida, Florida State are joining Miami at the big dance.
The Gators and Hurricanes both earned No. 6 seeds in the NCAA Tournament and will play Thursday in Dallas, while the Seminoles clinched a No. 9 seed and will play Friday in Nashville, Tenn.
UF will push for another deep tournament run despite inconsistent performances during the regular season.
On Thurday at about 10 p.m., the Gators will play the winner of an opening round game between No. 11 seed St. Bonaventure and No. 11 seed UCLA.
“We’re excited to compete in the NCAA Tournament again, which is one of the most unique and special events in all of sports,” UF coach Mike White said. “I’m happy for our team to have this opportunity, and we obviously have two really good potential opponents to start preparing for.”
If UF advances, it will play the winner of No. 3 Texas Tech vs. No. 14 Stephen F. Austin.
No. 7 seed Arkansas, No. 10 seed Butler, No. 2 seed Purdue and No. 15 Cal-State Fullerton loom on the other side of the bracket if the Gators reach the Sweet 16.
Florida is making its 19th NCAA Tournament appearance and second under White.
The Gators have a 42-16 NCAA Tournament record and have advanced to the Elite Eight during five consecutive NCAA appearances, including last season.
Senior point guard Chris Chiozza, a first team AllSEC selection and member of the SEC All-Defensive Team, is the Gators’ floor leader who contributes 11.2 points and 6.1 assists per game. He has delivered numerous clutch game-winning shots during his career, including a buzzer beater in last year’s tournament to keep Florida’s postseason run alive.
The Florida State men’s basketball team may have ended its regular season in subpar fashion, but the Seminoles were still able to accomplish one of their major goals.
FSU reached the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season and sixth time in the past 10 years.
The Seminoles will open play against No. 8-seed Missouri (2-12) in Nashville, Tenn., on Friday at about 10 p.m. If FSU advances, it would face the winner of No. 1 Xavier and NC Central versus Texas Southern on Sunday.
FSU (20-11) will need to drastically improve if it hopes to surpass its secondround exit to Xavier in the tournament last season and a disappointing finish to this season.
The Seminoles placed eighth among 15 teams in the competitive ACC and lost Louisville in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
