MIAMI – After struggling through one of their worst opening months, some help appears to be on the way for the undermanned Marlins.

Several key players are progressing on injury rehab assignments in the minor leagues. Pitcher Dan Straily and veteran infielder Martin Prado are getting close returning to the Marlins, possibly on the upcoming sixgame homestand that begins Friday.

Right-hander Dan Straily threw 88 pitches for Double-A Jacksonville on Tuesday in his third rehab start, and indications are his next outing may be with the Marlins during the homestand.

In addition, Prado played a seven-inning game at third base Tuesday for Class A Jupiter and may also be close to finally rejoining the Marlins.

Prado hasn’t played in the majors since July 17 before undergoing knee surgery on his right knee.

Straily, who was the Marlins’ most durable starter in 2017, has been on the disabled list since the season began due to a right forearm strain that occurred late in spring training. The Marlins were waiting to find out how he felt on Wednesday to determine his next assignment.

The Marlins have already set starters for the threegame series against the Rockies, but Straily could slot in as soon as Monday against the Phillies if he is deemed ready.

Straily pitched 5 1⁄3 innings against the Tennessee Smokies, a Chicago Cubs affiliate, giving up four runs (three earned) and six hits while striking out six and walking one.

In addition to Prado, Jupiter’s game Tuesday had JT Riddle at shortstop and right-hander Elieser Hernandez on the mound (four innings, three runs, five hits, three strikeouts, two walks).

Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen is also progressing in a rehab assignment with the Hammerheads, allowing only one run in 7 2⁄3 innings over two starts.
