Three judges face challengers
Three Broward County judges will face opponents in the Aug. 28 primary, while nine others will continue to serve on the bench after no one qualified to challenge them by the May 4 deadline.
County Judge Robert “Bob” Diaz was challenged by defense lawyer Michael John Heise in Group 10. Judge Michael Davis will face Rhoda Sokoloff, who is making her third run for the bench, in Group 17. Judge Robert W. Lee will face Stephen Leslie Lustig, whose practice focuses on traffic ticket defense, in Group 25.
Six candidates qualified to run in three races where the incumbent is retiring at the end of the term that ends in January.
Attorneys Allison Gilman, John F. Phillips and Jackie Powell will compete for the Group 19 seat currently held by County Judge Jane Fishman, who has been in office since 1998.
And Corey Amanda Cawthon, Tanner Channing Demmery, and Leonore M. Greller will face off for the Group 9 seat now held by Judge Sharon Zeller, who began serving in 1996.
County court judges handle misdemeanors and smaller lawsuits. The races are nonpartisan. The terms run for six years.
A candidate must receive at least 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff.
The following judges were re-elected without opposition when no one qualified to run against them: Olga Levine.
