Marlins alumni to work with kids at events

MIAMI — The Miami Marlins will host four Play Ball events across the South Florida community next week, featuring Marlins alumni, beginning on Monday.

The events are part of Major League Baseball’s Play Ball initiative, which encourages participat­ion in all forms of baseball among all ages, with a special focus on youth.

Former Marlins players will be featured at each of the events.

Planned activities include the Pitch, Hit, and Run competitio­n; Jr. Home Run Derby; kickball and skills stations. The events will also feature giveaways, a DJ and an appearance by Billy The Marlin.

Marlins alumni recently staged a softball game at Marlins Park as part of the franchise’s 25th Anniversar­y Weekend.

Here is the schedule for the upcoming week’s events:

Monday: 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., Gwen Cherry Park (7090 NW 22nd Ave., Miami).

Former relief pitcher Antonio Alfonseca will participat­e with approximat­ely 500 kids.

Tuesday: 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., Tamiami Park (11201 SW 24th St., Miami).

Alfredo Amezaga, who was a popular utility player with the Marlins from 2006-09, will take part with approximat­ely 500 kids

Thursday: 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., Goulds Park (11350 SW 216th St., Miami.

Placido Polanco, an infielder who played 16 seasons with four teams, including on season with Miami, will be featured in the event with 500 kids.

Friday: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., Flamingo Park (1900 NW 122nd Terrace, Pembroke Pines).

The lone event in Broward County will feature Charles Johnson, the former All-Star catcher from the Marlins’ 1997 championsh­ip team, who will join in the session with Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis and approximat­ely 300 kids.
