BOCA RATON — The Florida Atlantic football team lost its second incoming junior college recruit in two months.

Defensive tackle Charles Cameron announced late Tuesday night he was leaving the program. He revealed the news via his personal Twitter account.

“It is with great regret that I inform you of my decision to not continue my education at Florida Atlantic University,” Cameron wrote late Tuesday night. “I would like to thank the coaching staff, my teammates, staff members, student body and others who supported me. I would like to thank everyone for the help and support that I have received I wish you guys success on the season.”

A junior, Cameron was a threestar recruit at Copiah-Lincoln (Mississippi) Community College. He was one of the top members of coach Lane Kiffin’s 2018 class. Cameron, who signed during the Early Signing Period, was expected to compete for immediate playing time and joins receiver Nero Nelson as incoming transfers who decided to leave.

Nelson was considered among the top players in the recruiting class before departing last month. The Owls also lost Alabama transfer B.J. Emmons, who verbally committed in February but never signed a national letter of intent.

Cameron was mostly receiving second-team reps during training camp. The Owls have plenty of replacement candidates, including sophomore Marcel Southall, senior Ray Ellis and junior Will Davis.

Preseason watch lists

Defensive end Hunter Snyder and receiver DeAndre McNeal were the the latest Owls to grab spots on a preseason award watch list.

Snyder was placed on the list for the Ted Hendricks Award, given to the nation’s top defensive end. A senior, Snyder tied for the team lead with six sacks and was fourth with 57 tackles last season.

“It’s awesome being on the list, just getting recognized for your hard work,” Snyder said. “It doesn’t change anything. I have to work just as hard or harder.”

McNeal is up for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, which honors the nation’s top offensive player who displays the best sportsmanship and teamwork. A senior, McNeal caught 23 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns last year.

They joined tight end Harrison Bryant, safety Jalen Young, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and running back Devin “Motor” Singletary to receive national preseason accolades.

Tisdale slowly recovering

Sophomore running back Tyrek Tisdale continues to recover from a torn ACL that caused him to miss spring practices.

Tisdale was considered a strong candidate to back up Singletary, but has yet to be cleared for contact drills. The Owls are hoping Tisdale is ready by the opener Sept. 1 at Oklahoma.

“It’s a little pressure but like I’ve been telling everyone, everything happens for a reason,” Tisdale said. “I’m kind of grateful that I did get hurt because it made me realize not to take things for granted.”

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Tisdale is yet another talented Power Five conference transplant at FAU. He originally signed with Maryland out of high school, but didn’t qualify academically. He joined the Owls after playing one season at Milford Academy prep school in New York.
