Worker accused of having gun

- Doug Phillips

An employee of a middle school in Dania Beach was arrested on the first day of classes after a tipster told authorities that he had a weapon on campus and also claimed the school worker is not “stable,” according to the Broward Sheriff ’s Office.

Nathaniel Strowbridge, 57, a security specialist at Olsen Middle School, 330 SE 11th Terrace, was arrested Wednesday and charged with possessing a firearm on school property.

After the tip came in, according to a sheriff ’s office arrest report, the deputy assigned to Olsen Middle talked to Strowbridge, who first said he didn’t have a weapon with him on campus.

“Strowbridge later changed his story and admitted that he had a firearm in his personal vehicle” in the school’s designated parking lot, the arrest report said.

After getting a search warrant from a Broward judge, a .45-caliber Taurus handgun was found on the passengerside front floorboard of Strowbridge’s 2016 Nissan Rouge, according to the report.

During a court hearing Thursday, Strowbridge, who lives in Pompano Beach, told Broward Judge Kim Theresa Mollica that he has worked for the school district for 23 years.

Mollica set his bond at $10,000 and ordered that, when he gets out of jail, Strowbridge must be fitted with a GPS ankle monitor, must stay away from any school campus and cannot possess any weapons.

Strowbridge bonded out of jail Friday, records show.
