A guide to what’s popping up beachside

The core of Pompano Beach’s most easterly slice is awash in the sounds of heavy equipment — along with the sight of tractors and piles of dirt — as the oceanside neighborhood enters a new stage.

This year, the first beachfront restaurant — Beach House Pompano — opened since Fisherman’s Wharf closed its doors shortly after Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Ground was broken on another oceanside restaurant, Oceanic, just north of the city pier. And, speaking of the pier, replacement of the 54-year-old structure is well underway, with work expected to wrap up in early 2019.

And things are going to get even busier in the next 90 days, according to Tim Hernandez, of New Urban Communities. His company is turning six acres of what had been mostly a city-owned parking lot into “Pompano Fishing Village.”

“Hopefully, when we’re done, you’re going to feel like you’re in the Bahamas or the Keys,” Hernandez said, describing the architecture as a mixture of Old Florida, “tropical contemporary” and Art Deco.

Here’s a look at some of the key milestones Hernandez says are coming next in the area where Atlantic Boulevard meets State Road A1A:

■ Site prep has begun on the building for Alvin’s Island, a water/beach sportswear store on the west side of Pompano Beach Boulevard. Final building permits are expected to be issued in weeks.

■ Permits for a building housing Kilwin’s and BurgerFi are expected in the next 30 days.

■ Oceanic, a seafood restaurant, is expected to be completed early next year.

■ Permit applications for a five-story, 150-room hotel at 3410 Pier St. are expected in the next 60 days, with all permits expected to be submitted by October.

■ Permits for Lucky Fish Beach Bar and Grill, which will replace the city’s old concession stand, are submitted and could be issued in the next 30 to 60 days. Construction would start 90 days after that.

■ Harbor Promenade, which will include shops and at least two upscale restaurants, is under construction at the southeast corner of Atlantic Boulevard and Riverside Drive, and is expected to open this fall.
