You can’t have the lifeguard, but you can buy the iconic stand

Have you ever wanted to take a piece of Miami Beach home with you?

The city has listed six of its colorful and iconic lifeguard towers in an online auction. The towers have sold from $100 to $3,050 when they’ve gone up for sale before.

Beachgoers may recognize the boxy and bright wooden towers that date back to the 1980s. The stands come with stairs and a small deck. And they’ve got that South Beach flair and look like pieces of art.

“They are being replaced with newer stands that are more resistant with aluminum hardware and impact windows,” said Melissa Berthier, a spokeswoman for the city, which has a total of 36 lifeguard stands.

Depending on the buyer’s needs and creativity, the vintage towers can be transformed into a tree house, tiki bar or a big dog house, Berthier said. The stands are being sold in “as is” condition.

Lifeguard stand #113 at 13th Street beach has a patriotic theme: It’s bedecked in red, white and blue colors and stars like the American flag. The tower’s condition is listed as “cosmetically very good, structure good, unique.”

Lifeguard tower #141 is at 41st Street beach. Accented with yellow, torquise and purple hues, the tower is listed as in “fair to good’’ condition.”

Lifeguard #180, which sits at North Beach Oceanside Park at 81st Street, is splashed in shades of lavender. This one might need some TLC though. The tower had some roof damage from Hurricane Irma.

And Tower # 146 at 9th Street beach had been repurposed for the Miami Beach Police Department, which also used a nearby tower as a deejay booth during Spring Break earlier this year.

The winning bidders will be responsible for picking up and hauling away the stands.
