Coach used post to seek sex from boy, police say
What began with a Craigslist posting by “Dirty Dusty” seeking sex with a “young guy” ended with the arrest of an assistant high school wrestling coach for soliciting a minor for sex, Coral Springs police said.
Dustin Roy Garvin, 32, was arrested Tuesday at J.P. Taravella High School, 10600 Riverside Drive, where police say he is a micro technician and assistant wrestling coach.
In late August 2017, an undercover agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement replied to Garvin’s Craigslist ad and “explained that he had a
young son that he would take out of school early for Dirty Dusty,” according to the arrest report filed in the case.
The “father” indicated his son was almost 14-years-old.
In a series of electronic exchanges, Garvin sought assurances that he wasn’t communicating with a law enforcement officer and wasn’t being set up for a “sting” — even as he asked for additional details about the boy and what they could do together, the report said.
At one point Garvin was even “provided a picture of what appears to be at 13-year-old boy with a soccer ball,” according to the report.
When the undercover agent sought to meet up with Garvin for a latemorning coffee, Garvin said the time wasn’t good because he worked at a school — and suggested an evening meeting “as long as it was not near Coral Springs,” the report said.
The IP address and other information obtained from a subsequent subpoena led to Garvin’s identity and his Tuesday arrest, police said.
While being interviewed after being taken into custody, “Garvin admitted to coordinating with what he believed to be a parent of a 13-year-old child to provide oral sex,” the arrest report said.
“I was very surprised at that particular allegation,” said Cardinal Gibbons head wrestling coach Frank Pettineo.
“The wrestling community is really tight and coaches are generally aware a lot of times of different things. We never heard anything that would justify that kind of (allegation). I have always had typical disagreements with him concerning different things at matches, but nothing he ever did would give me cause to think of anything of that caliber,” Pettineo said.
On Wednesday afternoon, Garvin was preparing to bond out of jail following a court hearing that set his bond at $35,000. Broward Judge Kim Theresa Mollica ordered that, when released, Garvin — who has no prior criminal history — wear an electronic monitor, not have contact with minors and cannot use the internet.
According to Coral Springs police, the Broward County School Board Investigative Unit was informed of Garvin’s arrest.
Investigators say anyone with additional information can contact the Special Victims Unit of the Coral Springs Police Department at 954-346-1790.
