Sears in Boynton Beach to close
Store to join 39 others closing around the country after company filed for bankruptcy
The Sears department store inside the Boynton Beach Mall is among the latest to be slated for closure by Sears Holding, which filed for bankruptcy reorganization in mid-October.
The store, at 801 N. Congress Ave., will join 39 other stores closing around the country: 29 Sears and 11 Kmart locations, according to a company announcement on Nov. 8.
The Sears Auto Store in Boynton Beach, which is near the department store location, also will close, as will all other auto stores at the closing Sears store locations.
Employees have been told the affected stores will be closed in February, the company said.
Liquidation sales at these locations are expected to begin late next week.
Sears has seven department stores left in South Florida, including in Palm Beach Gardens, Coral Springs, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hialeah, Miami and Cutler Bay.
The store at the Westfield Broward Mall in Plantation closed this summer. And a list of 142 unprofitable closures was announced in October, including one Kmart, at 12350 SW Eighth St. in Miami. Those closures are expected to be completed by year’s end.
