Sun Sentinel Palm Beach Edition
Charlotte at FAU
When, where: 6 p.m. Saturday, FAU Stadium, Boca Raton TV: No TV Radio: ESPN West Palm 106.3 FM Weather: 78 degrees, 2 percent chance of rain. Online: Coverage at SunSentinel.com/fau; @DavidFurones_ on Twitter. Quick slant: Florida Atlantic looks to gain bowl eligibility with a win. It’s not a certainty the Owls would get selected for a bowl game, even with the six wins needed to be eligible, but coach Lane Kiffin said early this week he expects the Owls to be chosen for a bowl game with six wins. About FAU (5-6, 3-4 C-USA): Redshirt junior quarterback De’Andre Johnson sparked the Owls’ offense since his insertion in the second quarter of the win against FIU. FAU outscored the Panthers 42-7 from the moment he came in. Coach Lane Kiffin has not committed to a starter, but conventional wisdom tells you it’s hard to go away from Johnson after inconsistent play from Robison all year. About Charlotte (4-7, 3-4): Coach Brad Lambert, the only coach the program has had in its six-season history, was fired this week but will coach this one final game with the 49ers. With no shot at bowl eligibility, players are sure to be motivated to win one for Lambert. Three things to watch
■ The Owls run game, ranked 15th nationally at 246.8 rushing yards per game, will go up against Charlotte’s seventh-ranked rush defense (98.2 rush yards against).
■ Appreciate Devin “Motor” Singletary. It might be the last time we see the junior running back at FAU Stadium as he will have an NFL decision to make after the season.
■ Singletary enters with 1,260 rushing yards and a nation-leading 22 rushing touchdowns, but does redshirt junior Kerrith Whyte also end up with a 1,000-yard rushing season. He is 159 yards away.
