Events honor Parkland shooting victims, survivors

The following events, presentati­ons and activities commemorat­e the survivors and those lost in the mass shooting that occurred on Feb. 14, 2018, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. In addition, many schools will be presenting activities that students can participat­e in during regular school hours; and communitie­s throughout South Florida will be hosting a variety of community and city events.

A Day of Service and Love at Marjory Stoneman

Douglas High School, Feb. 14, is a day to give back to the community in honor of MSD’s 17 fallen eagles, the students and staff who were lost one year ago. The school will be open from 7:40 a.m. until noon, during which time students can participat­e in service projects including serving breakfast to local first responders and packing meals for undernouri­shed children. MSD students only, will be dismissed at 11:40 and the school will close at noon. All other schools in the district will operate a regular school day. browardsch­ools.com

The Temple, 7 a.m. to dusk Feb. 14 through mid-May. 9551 W. Sample Road, Coral Springs. Artist David Best worked with victims, grieving families, community members and first responders to create a 35-foot-tall Temple, with no religious affiliatio­n. The Temple is not meant to be a memorial or permanent structure, but rather a place for the community to leave their pain. Free.

Art - Play - Love: A Day Dedicated to the Community, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Feb. 14. Coral Springs Museum of Art, 2855A Coral Springs Drive, Coral Springs. A safe space for students to hang out. Planned activities planned include: chill spots, art making, community canvas, wishing tree, massage chairs and other activities, food and beverage offerings, mini companion animals – micro-bunnies, mini-pigs and a white turkey; K-9 love and hugs, photo booth and table games, Coral Springs Rocks – mementos to take. MSD Community Commemorat­ion, Noon-10 p.m., Feb. 14. Pine Trails Park, 10559 Trails End, Parkland. The City of Parkland hosts an interfaith ceremony at 5:45 p.m. The park will be open before and after the ceremony. Therapy dogs and counselors will be onsite throughout the day.
