Trump’s ‘no substance’ speech
President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address was filled with many platitudes but no substance.
The speech was billed as a call for “unity,’ but the divisive nature, veiled (or not so veiled) threats, and outright falsehoods belied any attempts at comity.
With the ghost of President Richard Nixon whispering in his ear, Trump used this all-important national platform to proclaim “there can be no peace or legislation, as long as we have foolish war and partisan investigations.” Really?
So Congress must abandon its responsibility to hold Trump and his administration accountable for his continued violations of the constitution, lies, and corruption? The implied threat was that nothing will get done unless the Democrats (and Special Counsel Robert Mueller) bend to his will and give him whatever he wants. This is simply not going to happen.
The highlight of the evening was Stacey Abram’s rebuttal. She gave us hope that there can be unity to solve our many problems. All we have to do is elect the right people to lead our country.
