Defensive coordinato­r Brent Venables earns $2.2 million a year . ... Ohio State AD Gene Smith will step down from the College Football Playoff selection committee to focus on helping first-year coach Ryan Day. Smith, who spent the last two seasons on the committee, will be replaced by Iowa AD Gary Barta . ... Former Vanderbilt AD David Williams II died. He was 71. The cause wasn’t disclosed. Williams, who retired Jan. 31, was the first black AD in the SEC when he took the job in July 2003.

Fire tore through the sleeping quarters of an academy for one of Brazil’s most popular profession­al clubs, killing 10 people and injuring three, most likely teenage players, authoritie­s said. Firefighte­rs were called just after 5 a.m. to the sprawling Ninho de Urubu training grounds of the Flamengo club in Rio de Janeiro’s western region. The cause of the fire wasn’t known.
