SNL pokes fun at Navarro and co-hosts on ‘The View’ again

- By Johnny Diaz

The writers and cast of “Saturday Night Live” had so much fun spoofing Miami’s Ana Navarro-Cardenas and her fellow co-hosts on “The View” last month that they couldn’t resist doing it again this weekend.

In the show’s 44th season finale, Kate McKinnon played Joy Behar, Aidy Bryant appeared as Meghan McCain, who described herself as the “only daughter at this table,” Cecily Strong parodied Abby Huntsman and Leslie Jones played host Whoopi Goldberg who described the show “as the most high stakes brunch on television.” Comedian Melissa Villaseñor reprised her role as Navarro-Cardenas, who joined the daytime talk show as a Friday co-host in November.

As the hosts discussed the first topic, how Alabama passed “a near total ban on abortion,” Villaseñor mimicked the Miami political commentator by speaking loudly in a thick Spanish accent and repeated herself now and again as NavarroCardenas is known to do sometimes.

“This law it is backwards. It is regressive. It is texting your ex. Honey, you don’t want to do that,’’ she said, her hands pointed to underscore her point. “It’s backwards. It’s regressive. Oh, no, I’m skipping.”

Midway through the sketch, SNL guest host Paul Rudd portrayed South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg and talked about his background and presidential candidacy. “I may only be 37 years old, but I do feel like I represent everyday Americans. I’m just a Harvard-educated, multilingual war veteran Rhodes scholar. I’m just like you.”

The ladies each poked fun of his youth and his name. They also asked him whether he’s ready to be president and pointed out that he’s gay.

“I think I saw your husband backstage, bring him out,’’ Villaseñor said as she and Bryant chanted, “Husband, husband, husband!” as Beck Bennett portraying Justin Buttigieg joined the table.

And then the women expressed their love for Joe Biden- who has been a favorite guest of the real show - to the sounds of “I Need You” by LeAnn Rimes.

On Twitter, the real Navarro-Cardenas said she appreciated the comedy and took a jab at the president.

“Thank God for @nbcsnl satirical spoofs that allow us to laugh at the absurdity and sheer insanity that is the current political climate,” she wrote. “I miss having a President with a sense of humor. Though I miss one that has a sense of decency and empathy even more.”
