Dog tossed over gate and left, woman says

- By Doug Phillips

FORT LAUDERDALE – Tanya Vartanian’s posting on Facebook captures the cruelty.

It includes security surveillance video from outside the Fort Lauderdale residence she shares with a roommate in Victoria Park.

The video, recorded before dawn Wednesday, shows the outside security gate, several feet high, leading to a walkway to the front door. Someone stops at the gate and throws a pit bull dog over it. The dog quickly dashes off camera and into some shrubbery.

“Some awful human threw her over the gate of my house,” Vartanian’s posting says, as she asks if any of her friends has information about the dog or the person who threw it.

Vartanian, 30, had been sleeping when the dog was thrown over the gate.

“My dog started freaking out a little bit,” she said. Looking outside she saw “some sort of

animal” outside the front door.

Later, she and roommate Ashely Steffen saw the black and white pit bull that appeared to be traumatized and frightened.

“She was backing up into the bushes and wouldn’t let us near her,” Vartanian said.

Eventually, the two were able to approach the female dog they are calling “Gorgonzola.” She ate some food, drank some water and didn’t appear physically injured from the ordeal — and certainly not vicious.

“She’s very sweet and very scared of humans for sure,” Vartanian said Thursday morning while driving Gorgonzola to an animal hospital to be examined.

So far there has been no information about the person who threw the dog over the gate.
