Cardinals: C Yadier Molina was activated from the 10-day injured list, and the team optioned rookie C Andrew Knizner to Triple-A Memphis. Molina missed 11 games after being sidelined May 29 with a strained right thumb tendon. At the time of his injury, Molina led all catchers in games, innings caught, RBIs and hits.
Braves: Recent acquisition Dallas Keuchel said his agent, Scott Boras, and Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos were in “constant communication” during the offseason, including talk of a possible multiyear deal. “We just really didn’t get to a conclusion for that,” said the former AL Cy Young winner . ... MLB handed 3B Josh Donaldson a one-game suspension following Monday’s incident with Pirates RHP Joe Musgrove and C Elias Diaz. Donaldson appealed the penalty . ... LHP A.J. Minter was recalled after a fiveweek stay at Triple-A Gwinnett. Manager Brian Snitker said he plans to use Minter in a late-inning role, but Luke Jackson will remain the closer. Minter was 0-4 with a 9.82 ERA and three saves in four chances over a span of 15 games before he was sent down.
Pirates: RHP Mitch Keller, the team’s top prospect, will make his second big-league start Wednesday against the Braves. He struck out a career-high 13 in his last start for Triple-A Indianapolis . ... The team optioned RHP Alex McRae to Triple A and recalled reliever Dovydas Neverauskas.
Yankees: Gio Urshela and Luke Voit homered off Zack Wheeler in a five-run fourth inning as the Yankees tied their season high with 15 hits in a 12-5 rout of the Mets in Game 1 of a day-night Subway Series doubleheader. Masahiro Tanaka gave up a three-run homer to Jeff McNeil that put the Mets ahead 4-1 in the third but rebounded to win for the first time in a month. Urshela had four RBIs and was a triple short of the cycle.
Mariners: 2B Dee Gordon was reinstated from the injured list, following a 19-game absence because of a bruised right wrist. Gordon was hit by a pitch on May 9 in New York. He was batting .281 with 16 runs, seven extra-base hits, 19 RBIs and 12 stolen bases in 45 games before he was hurt. RHP Matt Festa was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma to make room on the roster.
Orioles: RHP Alex Cobb will have season-ending surgery on his right hip, GM Mike Elias said. Cobb, who hasn’t pitched since April 26, was 0-2 with a 10.95 ERA in 12 1⁄3 innings pitched over three starts.
All-Star update: Dodgers OF Cody Bellinger (1,189,380) and Brewers OF Christian Yelich (1,057,855) are the top vote getters in NL All-Star balloting . ... Hall of Famer Jim Thome and Dennis Martinez will be the managers in a revamped All-Star Futures Game on July 7 in Cleveland. The game is switching formats and will match AL prospects against young players from the NL. Previously, a world team faced U.S. players. In addition, the game is being shortened from nine innings to seven, which was the length in the initial Futures Game in 1999.
