AROUND THE HORN

■ Twins: Six-time All-Star slugger Nelson Cruz will avoid surgery on his injured left wrist. A specialist in New York found no damage beyond the initially diagnosed ruptured tendon. Cruz, 39, will resume a hitting program upon joining the team Tuesday in Milwaukee. He’s eligible to return from the IL on Aug. 19. Cruz is hitting .294 with 32 HRs and 76 RBIs.

■ Indians: OF Yasiel Puig dropped the appeal of his three-game suspension for his involvement in a brawl when he was with the Reds. Puig served the ban Monday when the Indians opened a three-game series against the Red Sox. Puig was disciplined for his involvement in the latest benches-clearing incident between the Reds and Pirates on July 30. The fracas began shortly after Puig was dealt to the Indians as part of a three-team trade that sent RHP Trevor Bauer from the Indians to the Reds. The animated 28-year-old Puig was batting .357 with one HR and six RBIs in 11 games for the Indians.

■ Phillies: Former NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta told NBC Sports on Sunday night that he hopes to soon discuss with the Phillies whether he needs to rest to take care of a bone spur in his elbow. “I don’t necessarily want to make a decision right now,” he said after allowing five runs on seven hits in just three innings against the Giants. “We’ll ... maybe have a conversation on Tuesday.” The plan had been for Arrieta to pitch through the injury, with manager Gabe Kapler saying last month, “It’s always worth considering if Jake at 85 percent of himself is a better option than what we have at Triple A.” Arrieta, 33, hasn’t made it through the sixth inning of a start since June and said Sunday that his elbow “hurts every day.”

■ Red Sox: Rookie INF Michael Chavis was placed on the 10-day IL with a sprained left shoulder. Chavis has 18 HRs and 58 RBIs, second only to Mets slugger Pete Alonso among rookies. But Chavis has been in a slump, batting just .156 (5-for-32) in his last 11 games. The shoulder injury could explain his recent slide. Chavis’ HR and RBI totals are the most by a Red Sox rookie since Ellis Burks hit 20 HRs with 59 RBIs in 1987. Chavis has played first base (49 games), second (45) and third (five) this season.

■ Extra innings: Didi Gregorius, Gleyber Torres, Gio Urshela and Cameron Maybin homered, powering the Yankees to an 8-5 victory in a day-night doubleheader opener in Baltimore that extended their winning streak against the Orioles to 13. The Yankees have 56 HRs against the Orioles this season, eight more than the previous big league record for HRs against a team in a season. The AL East-leading Yankees are 14-2 against the Orioles with three games left and have won 11 of their last 13 overall. Urshela finished a triple shy of the cycle . ... The Reds claimed INF Freddy Galvis off waivers from the Blue Jays. Galvis, 29, is hitting .267 with 18 HRs and 54 RBIs this season . ... MLB will open next season March 26, its earliest start other than international games.
