Percentage points could determine Johnson’s fate

ORLANDO — James Johnson continues to minimize what apparently still is a maximum concern for the Miami Heat.

A week after being reinstated following a banishment because of conditioning concerns, Johnson again has found himself working separately from teammates, this time back at American-Airlines Arena while the Heat turned their attention to Thursday night’s exhibition against the Orlando Magic at Amway Center.

“I mean, it’s that Miami way,” Johnson said. “I’m not there yet. I’m in great shape, I feel good, my conditioning is good. But it’s not the Miami Heat way yet, and I’ve got to accept that.”

Johnson has yet to be in uniform during the preseason after missing all of training camp. A tri-captain the past two seasons, the 32-year-old forward said it has been difficult being away from teammates beyond the past four practice sessions.

“Absolutely, absolutely,” he said. “It really helps during this time for the team to bond and things like that. But I understand and I’m just going to keep working every day.”

There appears to be differences between Johnson and the team when it comes to how close he is to his required team standards.

“A couple of points over body fat,” he said. “A couple of points of body fat and I’ll be there.”

The Heat open their regular season Wednesday at American-Airlines Arena against the Memphis Grizzlies.

“I sure hope so,” he said of being in uniform on opening night. “You know, body fat takes a long time to drop. So I’m just waiting for that to get down.

“I know my numbers. My weight is good, my conditioning is good, I’m just waiting for my numbers to drop.”

Asked if he is in a position where he can get to what is required, Johnson said confidently, “Absolutely, absolutely.”
