Dolphins sign second-round pick Davis to rookie contract

- By Safid Deen

Miami Dolphins second-round pick Raekwon Davis signed his four-year rookie contract Monday, the same day his Alabama teammate Tua Tagovailoa also agreed to a deal with the team.

Davis, a defensive tackle the Dolphins selected with the 56th pick during last month’s NFL draft, will earn $5,655,510 and receive a signing bonus just shy of $1.7 million. ESPN first reported the signing.

Davis, standing at 6 foot 7 and weighing 311 pounds at the NFL combine in February, gives Dolphins coach Brian Flores a bulldozing presence in the heart of Miami’s revamped defense.

Davis gained national attention for his play as a sophomore during Alabama’s title run in 2017, with 10 tackles, two sacks, and an interception in the team’s two playoff wins. He earned first-team All-SEC honors by posting 69 tackles, 10 for loss, and a team-high 8.5 sacks in 14 games with six starts.

The attention to his play led to his statistical production to decrease in his junior year (55 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks with 14 starts) and senior season (47 tackles, three for loss, 0.5 sack in 12 starts).

But the Dolphins are confident Davis can make an impact at several positions on Miami’s defensive line.

Davis is the sixth member of the Dolphins’ 11-player draft class to sign or agree to his rookie deal, joining Tagovailoa, offensive guard Solomon Kindley, defensive linemen Jason Strowbridge and Curtis Wearer and long snapper Blake Ferguson.

First-round offensive tackle Austin Jackson, the USC standout who was drafted with the 18th pick, will likely receive a four-year deal that pays him $13,640,353 million with a signing bonus worth $7.5 million when he signs his contract with Miami.

First-round cornerback Noah Igbinoghene, the Auburn standout the Dolphins used the 30th pick to select, will likely receive a four-year deal that pays him $11,254,202, and gives him a signing bonus worth roughly $5.7 million.

Robert Hunt, the Louisiana-Lafayette right guard/tackle taken with the 39th pick in the second round, is slated to earn $8,065,742 over the first four years of his deal with a signing bonus worth $3.4 million.

Brandon Jones, the Texas safety the Dolphins selected in the third round, is slotted to earn a base salary of $4,079,572 during his four-year rookie deal, and will receive a signing bonus in the neighborhood of $1.1 million.

And former Navy standout Malcolm Perry, the Dolphins’ seventh-round pick, will likely receive a $97,000 signing bonus on the four-year, $3,392,324 deal when he signs.
