Staff is finalized as Inter Miami unofficially starts training camp
Inter Miami CF finalized new coach Phil Neville’s technical staff while also unofficially kicking off preseason training camp on Monday.
Neville brought two coaches with him from England to his Inter Miami staff — Mark Mason and Alec Scott.
Mason most recently worked alongside Neville as goalkeepers coach of the England women’s national team (2016-21), also working for several other English clubs throughout his 14-year coaching career.
He’ll serve as an Inter Miami assistant coach, director of goalkeeping and set-piece specialist.
Scott most recently worked for the English Football Association for eight years. He was the senior team lead analyst for the England women’s national team from 2018-21. Scott will be a performance analyst for Inter Miami.
Jason Kreis, who was Fort Lauderdale CF’s — Inter Miami’s League One affiliate — head coach last season, will join Neville’s staff as an assistant coach. He’ll remain the U-23 U.S. men’s national team head coach.
Nicholas Lewis and Miguel Motolongo are the other new additions to Inter Miami’s coach staff.
Lewis, who’ll be Inter Miami’s sports scientist, was the Portland Timbers’ assistant strength and conditioning coach and data analyst from 201418. Motolongo previously worked for the U.S. Soccer Federation, Florida State and Los Angeles FC. He’ll be Inter Miami’s head of MLS performance.
Anthony Pulis, Sebastián Saja and Brett Uttley were retained from last year’s coaching staff.
Neville’s full staff:
■ Jason Kreis, assistant coach;
■ Nicholas Lewis, sports scientist;
■ Mark Mason, assistant coach, director of goalkeeping and set-piece specialist;
■ Miguel Motolongo, head of MLS performance;
■ Anthony Pulis, assistant coach;
■ Sebastián Saja, assistant goalkeeper coach;
■ Alec Scott, performance analyst;
■ Brett Uttley, assistant analyst.
Several Inter Miami players reported for voluntary training on Monday, with the first day of mandatory preseason practice set for March 8.
It was Neville’s first training session with the team since being hired in January.
“Phil’s main message, first he wants to set a culture within the group,” Victor Ulloa said. “He made the message clear that last year wasn’t good enough and we need to pick that up, set a higher standard for ourselves and make everybody proud. He’s a very intense guy and he’s going to help us a lot.”
