Padres GM: No surgery for Tatis

Padres star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. suffered a partially dislocated left shoulder on a hard swing Monday night and left the game against the Giants.

Tatis struck out against Anthony DeSclafani and winced in pain as he fell to the ground. He cradled his left arm while he got up, and manager Jayce Tingler and a trainer held his left arm against his body as he walked off the field.

Padres GM A.J. Preller said Tuesday that Tatis will be placed on the 10-day injured list but isn’t expected to need surgery.

Preller added that the IL stint is “just being safe.”

The 22-year-old Tatis left a game late in spring training with left shoulder discomfort but was back two days later. Tingler said then that Tatis had been dealing with left shoulder discomfort since his minor league days. Tatis later said he’d had it since rookie ball.

Tatis has struggled this season, committing five errors and hitting just .167, although he hit a 465-foot home run in Sunday’s loss to the Diamondbacks.

He signed the longest contract in big league history on Feb. 22, a 14-year, $340 million deal.

College basketball: One year after finishing second in a close race, Iowa big man Luka Garza won the John R. Wooden Award. Garza, a 6-foot-11 senior who averaged 24.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks this season, secured the award and completed the sweep of the major national player of the year awards in 2020-21 after finishing behind Dayton’s Obi Toppin in last year’s Wooden Award race . ... As expected, Illinois junior Ayo Dosunmu will declare for the NBA draft and forgo his remaining college eligibility by hiring an agent. Dosunmu was a consensus first team All-American and the winner of the Bob Cousy Award, presented to the nation’s top point guard. Dosunmu averaged 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game while shooting 39% from 3-point range.

NBA: The Nets announced that All-Star G James Harden, a leading contender for league MVP, will miss at least 10 days with a right hamstring strain, but teammate Kevin Durant is probable to return Wednesday against the Pelicans. Harden played just four minutes before he was ruled out of Monday’s 114-112 win over the Knicks. He had missed the two previous games. Durant has missed the last 23 games after suffering a right hamstring strain in mid-February.

Olympics: The State Department said the Biden administration is consulting with allies about a joint approach to China and its human rights record, including how to handle the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The department initially suggested that an Olympic boycott to protest China’s rights abuses was among the possibilities, but a senior official said later that a boycott hasn’t yet been discussed.

Soccer: Phil Foden scored in the 90th minute to lift Manchester City to a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of a Champions League quarterfinal. Dortmund will host the second leg April 14. In other first-leg action, Vinícius Júnior scored a goal in each half as Real Madrid beat visiting Liverpool 3-1. Liverpool will host the second leg April 14.
