Gov. Ron DeSantis axed state dollars Wednesday that would have gone to improve South Florida roads, aid struggling students and bolster early childhood education for low-income residents.

DeSantis’ veto list includes more than $8.3 million in Broward and Palm Beach projects pitched by lawmakers.

DeSantis cut $1.5 billion from a record $101.5 billion budget he signed in New Smyrna Beach.

About $1 billion in federal aid made up most of the veto amount, which DeSantis said he declined to accept because of concerns about federal rules on how the money could be spent.

DeSantis vetoed about 150 projects out of roughly 700 submitted by lawmakers statewide.

Here are some South Florida projects that landed on the veto list:

■ Jack and Jill Children’s Center, $650,000, a center that serves low-income working families in Broward County with early childhood education.

■ Oak Street Home, Female Teen Delinquency Prevention Program, $630,000, a program to help delinquent teen girls in Palm Beach County.

■ City of Coral Springs — Public Safety/Public Works Building Hardening Project, $400,000, a new city building able to withstand a hurricane.

■ Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders, $400,000, a mentoring program for students in Broward County Public Schools who are at risk of not graduating.

■ Caregiving Youth Project Expansion, $250,000, a project that helps middle and high school students in Palm Beach County who are caring for a family member.

■ Plantation Special Needs Park, $200,000, a multi-sensory playground at Liberty Tree Park for special needs children.

■ West Park Youth Crime Prevention, $200,000, funding to provide school and summer programming, including a skit that would feature the city’s students as actors.

■ Community Based post-COVID Acceleration Initiative, $200,000, a partnership between the School District of Palm Beach County and the Urban League of Palm Beach County to provide summer tutoring to 90 middle school students.

■ Jewish Transportation — Rales Rides (JTRR) - Palm Beach County, $150,000, a transportation program to provide seniors with free rides to and from the Weisman Delray Community Center.

■ Sunrise Veterans and Senior Repurposing of Facility, $150,000, funding to convert a retail space into a center for seniors and veterans.

■ Pembroke Pines License Plate Reader Project, $125,000, license plate readers to assist police with cars that are stolen, involved with felony crimes or wanted for other reasons.

■ Delray Beach Learning Loss Recovery Tutorial Program, $80,000, a project to help students overcome academic losses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

■ Pembroke Park Community Garden Solar Safety Lighting, $50,000, solar safety security lighting for a town-owned community garden.

Water projects

■ Delray Beach Owens Baker Tank Improvements, $250,000.

■ Coconut Creek Hillsboro Water Storage Tank Rehabilitation, $100,000.

Road and transportation projects

■ Central Palm Beach County Historical Infrastructure Improvement, $3 million, funding to reduce water pollution through the enhancement of existing roads.

■ Blount Streetscape Improvements Project — Pompano Beach, $1 million.

■ Village of Royal Palm Beach — La Mancha Extension, $450,000.

■ Boynton Beach Town Square Enhanced Pedestrian Crossing, $75,000.
