Record-tying streak ends for Ko at BMW
Jin Young Ko missed extending an LPGA Tour scoring record in the rain while her South Korean compatriots packed the first round leaderboard of the BMW Ladies Championship on Thursday in Busan, South Korea.
Ko had 14 straight rounds in the 60s, tying her with Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam (2005) and So Yeon Ryu (2015-17) for the most in tour history, going into the round. But Ko finished with a 1-under 71 after a birdie on the 18th hole at LPGA International Busan.
Ko was seven strokes behind leader Na Rin An.
Japanese golfer Hiroshi Iwata shot a 7-under 63 to take the first-round lead at the PGA Tour’s Zozo Championship in Chiba, Japan. Iwata had a one-stroke advanatage over Chile’s Joaquin Niemann and 2021 Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama of Japan. Tokyo Olympics gold medal winner Xander Schauffele opened with a 70, while British Open champ Collin Morikawa shot 71.
College football: The family of Jake Ehlinger, a Texas linebacker who died in May, said his death was caused by an accidental overdose of what was believed to be Xanax laced with Fentanyl. Ehlinger, the younger brother of former Texas and current Colts QB Sam Ehlinger, was found unresponsive on May 6. He was 20.
NBA: 76ers All-Star G Ben Simmons left the team’s practice facility without working out and is expected to meet with organizational leadership Friday to again discuss his playing status, ESPN reported. Simmons requested a trade during the offseason.
NHL: Devils F Jack Hughes was placed on IR with a dislocated left shoulder and is out indefinitely. Hughes will not need surgery, but there’s not timeline yet for his return. ... Jets F Mark Scheifele was placed on the COVID19 list, joining team captain Blake Wheeler . ... The Oilers placed G Mike Smith on IR with a lowerbody injury.
