- By Ben Crandell Staff writer Ben Crandell can be reached at bcrandell@sunsentinel.com.

This is a weekend of South Florida at its most boisterous and colorful (crosses fingers while looking at the weather forecast) — with the return of SunFest in West Palm Beach, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds at the Fort Lauderdale Air Show, more stars and stripes on display for Fleet Week, plus Brazilian Carnaval in Hollywood, the Boca Beer Wine & Spirits Fest and the unbridled joy of the Color Run. Here’s a look ahead.

FRIDAY

SunFest is back: Long-awaited SunFest 2022 hits the waterfront in downtown West Palm Beach this weekend, with Thursday opening-nighters Goo Goo Dolls and Sam Hunt followed by a lineup highlighted by Counting Crows and Slightly Stoopid (Friday); Brett Young, Melissa Etheridge, Adam Lambert and Lil Wayne (Saturday); and Steve Aoki, Boys II Men, Black Pumas and AJR (Sunday). A one-day ticket purchased for entry on Thursday or Friday is $65; a ticket for Saturday or Sunday is $70. Two-day passes cost $110, are date-specific (pick your days at purchase) must be purchased online. Four-day passes cost $120. VIP access costs $130 per day Thursday-Friday; $150 per day Saturday-Sunday, with fourday passes $325 or $450, depending on which stage you pick. For more information, visit SunFest.com.

DIY cocktails: Chain Bridge Distillery in Oakland Park ( just west of Dixie Highway at 3500 NE 11th Ave.) will host a gin cocktail workshop on Friday evening, demystifying the spirit through hands-on creations of three classic cocktails: Gin Collins, Bee’s Knees and Royal Hawaiian. The workshop is 7-8:30 p.m. Cost: $50. Visit Facebook.com/ChainBridgeDistillery.

Near beer: This is the final weekend of the inaugural Miami Beer Week, admirable in its intent to call attention to the depth and diversity of the South Florida beer scene but flawed in its apparent assumption that the region’s most interesting beer is being made south of Pembroke Pines. However, MBW has been an effective energizer of the scene, with breweries all over offering special #MiamiBeerWeek pours. For instance, Yeasty Brews Artisanal Beers in Lauderhill has a MBW tap-takeover collaboration with Pontoon Brewing 5-10 p.m. Friday, a Georgia brewery enthusiastically recommended by a UGA friend. So, thanks, Miami Beer Week! Visit YeastyBrews. com.

Ticket window: Tickets ($34.75+) will go on sale 10 a.m. Friday for multiplatinum performer Lizzo, bringing The Special Tour to FLA Live Arena in Sunrise on Sept. 23, with guest artist Latto. Florida native and “Tosh 2.0” star Daniel Tosh is bringing his Florida Trash Tour to Hard Rock Live in Hollywood on Nov. 19, with tickets ($65+) on sale 10 a.m. Friday at MyHRL.com. A presale is under way through the Hard Rock Facebook and Twitter pages.

Actor-comedian Chris Tucker has a new date at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood on July 14, with tickets ($55+) on sale 10 a.m. Friday at MyHRL.com. A presale is under way through the Hard Rock Facebook and Twitter pages.

While we’re at it, tickets to see crooner Michael Bublé Aug. 12 at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise go on sale 10 a.m. next Friday, May 6, at Ticketmaster.com. A presale for members of Bublé’s Bungalow-B fan club begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 3.

A little Havana on Las Olas: Cuba Libre restaurant will begin a month-long celebration of its first anniversary on Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas Boulevard (improbably kicking off on Thursday with a 5-8 p.m. appearance by former “SNL” star Joe Piscopo) with Viva La Noche parties Friday-Saturday beginning at 10:30 p.m. There will be Latin and top 40 hits by DJ El Niño “from Connecticut” (what, now?) and free shots for the first 50 guests. Visit CubaLibreRestaurant.com.

SATURDAY

Flying colors: The Fort Lauderdale Air Show hits the beach 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, highlighted by the return of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds in their six F-16 Vipers flying over the crowds at 1,000 miles per hour. This year’s basic Drop Zone passes (prime viewing, restrooms, food-drink vendors) cost $35 per day ($24.50 ages 3-12) until midnight Friday at FortLauderdaleAirShow.com, where several levels of VIP access also are available. For an up-close experience, check out the Flight Suit Social, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday on the tarmac of Jetscape Services at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, a gathering of Thunderbirds pilots and other participants, live entertainment, food and drink. Tickets cost $150, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Cajun

Scholarship, a fund that honors Thunderbirds pilot Stephen “Cajun” Del Bagno, who died in a 2018 accident. Visit FortLauderdaleAirShow.com.

Hue go, girl: The Color Run, also known as “the happiest 5K on the planet,” returns to downtown Fort Lauderdale 7 a.m. Saturday with pre- and post-event activities centered on Huizenga Park. As you may recall, runners wear white and are doused in colored powder at each kilometer, ending the untimed event a brighter, bolder version of themselves for the after party, with the presentation of Magic Unicorn participant medals, vendors, music, dancing and perhaps more powder. Advance registration costs at $24.99 to $44.99, depending on how many fashion accessories you want. Kids ages 8 and younger cost $19.99. A check-in party, which is an opportunity for advance registration and pick-up for participant kits, will be held at Huizenga Park 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday. Visit TheColorRun.com.

Weekend movies: If you, too, grew up with random silverware and a coffee cup somehow “acquired” from iconic New York (and Philadelphia) restaurant chain Horn & Hardart, then you’ll be interested in the big-screen homage “The Automat,” opening in South Florida theaters this weekend. The documentary about these now-defunct self-serve eateries — meals sitting behind small glass doors that could be opened after coins were inserted — includes memories from Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Starbucks founder Howard Schultz, Colin Powell and others. Filmmaker Lisa Hurwitz will be at the Movies of Delray for Q&A sessions after Saturday screenings at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. and before the 7 p.m. film, as well as on Sunday following the 1 p.m. showing. Visit MoviesOfDelray.com.

In downtown Delray Beach, Old School Square will be the setting for a free 8 p.m. Saturday screening of “In the Heights,” the 2021 movie based on the hit Broadway musical (lyrics and music by Lin-Manuel Miranda). Ostensibly the story of a lovesick Dominican bodega owner, it’s also a love letter to life in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood. Admission is free. It’s BYO lawn chairs and blankets, and free popcorn and snow cones will be available, courtesy of the Delray Beach Police Department. Visit Facebook. com/DelrayBeachParks.

Lookin’ at you, Mom: The long-running local makers series Indie Craft Bazaar on Saturday will bring more than 100 booths showcasing art, handmade craftiness, food, drink (including $5 mimosas) and DIY activities to three connected venues in downtown Fort Lauderdale — Revolution Live, Backyard and Stache. Mother’s Day is May 8, and this event will be filled with opportunities to pick up some unique thoughtfulness. Admission is free to the all-ages gathering, which runs noon-5 p.m. Parking also is free in the lot on the north side of Revolution Live. Visit IndieCraftBazaar.com.

Take the kids: The historic Fort Lauderdale Fire & Rescue Museum in Sailboat Bend (1022 W. Las Olas Blvd.) will host grand-reopening festivities 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, with tours, kids’ activities, music and more. The refurbished fire house is a mustsee gem, built in 1927 by famed South Florida architect Francis Abreu. Admission is free. Visit: FortLauderdaleFireMuseum.com.

Drink local: Fort Lauderdale nanobrewery LauderAle hosts its seventh annual Home Brew Competition & Beer Festival 5-9 p.m. Saturday, a showcase for beer you can’t get anywhere else from more than 15 local home brewers. The winner will have their beer brewed at scale at LauderAle and added to the tap lineup at the brewery. The festival has 40+ beers, food trucks, live music and a cool crowd. Tickets: $25. Visit Lauderale.co.

Big Brazilian sounds: Livening up downtown Hollywood’s ArtsPark 7-11 p.m. Saturday, will be Hollywood Brazilian Carnaval, a free event featuring Gafieira Rio Miami, the high-energy 11-piece Brazilian big band led by Latin Grammy winner Diogo Brown, and well as other singers and dancers. Arrive early at 6 p.m. to take part in a samba percussion workshop and interactive performance by drum ensemble Miamibloco, created by educator and percussionist Brian Potts of Nu Deco Ensemble. Admission is free. Visit HollywoodFL.org.

Spirited times: The Boca Beer Wine & Spirits Fest takes over Mizner Park Amphitheater on Saturday with the obvious attractions joined by live entertainment, food and games. Separate tasting sessions are at 1-4:30 p.m. and 6-9:30 p.m. Tickets cost $42 (plus taxes/fees). Visit MiznerAmp.com.

SUNDAY

Cool for Cats: The Florida Panthers’ Cats Playoff Pub Crawl will roam Atlantic Avenue hot spots in downtown Delray Beach 1-5 p.m. Sunday, on the eve of the NHL postseason. Sponsored by Coors Light (probably not Avalanche saboteurs), the crawl will begin at Sandbar, then hit Johnnie Brown’s, Delray Beach Market and Tin Roof. The $15 ticket includes a T-shirt, four drink tickets and a 2022 playoff swag bag. All proceeds benefit the Florida Panthers Foundation. Visit Facebook.com/FLAPanthers.
