FAU High School junior Jack Quinn shot a 2-under-par 70 to capture the Class 1A individual boys golf championship while also lifting his team to a state title, joining the American Heritage girls (Class 2A) and Jupiter boys (Class 3A) among the championship winners represented from Broward and Palm Beach at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills from Nov. 8-16.

The FHSAA shortened the Class 3A and 1A state championship to a one-day, 18-hole round due to Hurricane Nicole. The Class 2A state championship featured a two-day, 36-hole format.

American Heritage won the Class 2A girls title for the third consecutive year and 11th time in school history after recording a 615 total during two rounds (309306).

The Patriots were led by junior Katherine Schaefer, who placed second with a 141 total (71-70). Schaefer had a birdie on the 17th hole and just finished one shot behind the leaderboard after a par on the 18th. Junior Alesandra Tabora placed ninth after recording a 151 total (74-77) and seventh-grader Laura Monsalve also stepped up with a 154 total (78-76).

“We continue to work hard and have been able to use the same template for many years on how we play and and with our schedule to prepare our kids,” American Heritage girls coach Mike Carlin said. “We get them used to traveling and playing 18 holes for two days so they are ready to play at the state tournament. We have been able to build our program and follow that routine.”

At the Class 1A boys state individual championship, Quinn finished ahead by one stroke as four other golfers tied for second. Quinn recorded an eagle from 145 yards out on the seventh hole and registered a birdie on the ninth to gain momentum heading into the back nine. He also recorded a birdie on the 15th and made par on each of the final three holes to secure the victory.

“After not making it that far last year at states, I worked hard to make an improvement in my game,” Quinn said. “The tournament completely changed just having one-day so it’s hard to get off to a slow start. The eagle completely changed the entire round and my momentum and I was able to stay hot. The last three holes were challenging and I knew what I had to post. It’s a difficult golf course so I did well.”

Quinn, who competed at Dwyer during his sophomore campaign, made an immediate impact in his first season with FAU High as they captured the first team championship in any sport in school history. FAU High sophomore Mateo Desmond finished tied for ninth (73) and FAU senior Jack Manelas tied for 12th (74) as they recorded a team total of 294.

“We have a lot of talent and they were so competitive with each other,” FAU High boys golf coach Derrick Marsh said. “They performed at a high level and were able to gather together and perform as a team.”

Jupiter earned the Class 3A boys state championship for the first time in school history with a total of 297. Sophomore Brayden Jenard (73) finished tied for seventh and senior James Earle (74) also stepped up for the Warriors.

In the Class 1A girls championship, FAU High sophomore Amelie Phung shot a 68 to place second. The FAU High girls team finished in third place (291).

Park Vista senior Emmanuel Lim shot a 71 and finished tied for second in the Class 3A boys individual tournament. Boca Raton senior Alex Heard tied for fifth (72) and senior Jack Kantowski tied for seventh (73) as the Bobcats team placed fourth (305).

The American Heritage-Delray boys team earned fourth (624) at the Class 2A final. Junior Jason Shwartz led the Stallions and tied for fifth with a 147 total (75- 72).
