Deadly crash in Tamarac kills woman

4 others injured; engine ripped from car upon impact

TAMARAC — A car crash in Tamarac Monday afternoon that killed a woman and injured four other people was so violent that the force ripped out one of the car’s engines, flipped both cars, ejected one person and damaged a concrete sign and two other cars.

About 1:30 p.m., a woman driving a 2019 Hyundai Tucson SUV and Frantz Laine, 19, of Pompano Beach, who was driving a 2014 Lexus IS250, collided near the 7400 block of West McNab Road. The Hyundai driver, traveling west on the road, was turning left into the University Commons strip mall and Laine, traveling east, crashed, the Broward Sheriff ’s Office said.

The impact detached the Hyundai’s engine, flipped the car and ejected one person, the Sheriff ’s Office said.

The Lexus left the road, hit a fire hydrant, bushes, a sign outside of the strip mall and then rolled on top of a car parked outside of the plaza. A piece that fell off the plaza sign damaged a second parked, unoccupied car.

The adult woman driving the Hyundai had two passengers — an adult woman, who died, and a minor boy. Laine had one adult male passenger, according to the Sheriff ’s Office.

Tamarac Fire Rescue took all five people to the hospital, where the front passenger of the Hyundai was pronounced dead.

All were trauma alerts, Van Schoen, a spokesperson for Tamarac Fire Rescue, said Monday.

The Sheriff ’s Office released only Laine’s name Tuesday afternoon.

The four others’ names are withheld under Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved constitutional amendment that allows crime victims to shield identifying information from the public.

The Sheriff ’s Office did not provide an update on the conditions of the four injured. Their investigation is ongoing.
