Former NFL standout Vontae Davis was found unresponsive in home gym, 911 call logs shows

Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis was found unresponsive in the gym area of his Southwest Ranches home Monday morning, according to 911 calls released Tuesday.

The woman who found Davis told a 911 operator she came to the home that morning and was doing usual things but couldn’t find Davis at first, until she walked around and into the gym. The operator told the woman to get any defibrillator device if it was available to attempt to restore a heartbeat. Fire rescue crews arrived moments later.

Davis was found at the home where he lived, which was owned by his grandmother, in the 6000 block of Southwest 178th Avenue. He was 35.

Foul play is not suspected, Davie Police said Monday afternoon.

Davis’s personal assistant called 911 on behalf of the woman who found Davis because she “couldn’t even speak,” too stunned from the discovery, the assistant told a 911 operator. The assistant said the woman who found Davis had called her multiple times since about 7:30 a.m.

“She arrived, and he’s on the ground of the residence,” the assistant told the operator as she was on her way to Davis’s home. Other information she provided at that moment appears to be redacted from the call, and she added that she knew there were guns in the home.

The operator asked if the woman who was at the home with Davis could talk with 911.

“She froze,” Davis’s assistant said. “She called me, and she couldn’t even speak. That’s why I called.”

A few moments later, the operator called the assistant, who was still driving to Davis’s home, again after calling the woman five times with no answer.

“Yeah, the girl that is there, she’s very scared,” the assistant told the 911 operator. “She can’t even talk …”

“OK. Is there anything else

that she said?” the operator asked.

Any response from Davis’s assistant appears to be redacted.

“So he does have weapons, as in guns, in the home?” the operator asked.

“Yeah, there’s guns in the home … three or four guns. In his bedroom, on the nightstand …” the assistant answered.

The assistant told the operator she had last seen Davis on Friday but knew someone else had seen him Saturday evening.

The assistant said later in the call that the woman who found Davis initially texted her and then sent her a video, but what the assistant said about the video appears to be redacted from the call.

“And then she started just blasting my phone, and when I answered, she FaceTimed me and she showed me him laying on the ground …” the assistant told the operator.

“OK,” the operator said. “We should have units arriving now. I did send police and paramedics out.”

The police department as of Tuesday afternoon has not released additional information about the death investigation.

“The Broward County

Office of Medical Examiner and Trauma Services is investigating the death of 35-year-old Vontae Davis of Southwest Ranches, Florida,” a Medical Examiner’s Office representative said in an email to the South Florida Sun Sentinel Tuesday.

“At this time, there is no further information available pending a full examination, further testing, and studies. It can take up to 90 days to complete the investigation and determine the cause and manner of death.”

Davis was a first-round draft pick of the Dolphins in 2009, selected at No. 25.

The cornerback played three seasons for Miami before being traded to the

Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 27, 2012, ahead of his fourth NFL season.

Davis had nine interceptions over his three years with the Dolphins.

Inconsistent at the start his career, he was eventually selected to a pair of Pro Bowls in 2014 and 2015 with the Colts.

In 2018 with the Buffalo Bills, Davis famously retired during halftime of his first game with the team against the Los Angeles Chargers. He finished his career with 22 interceptions and 97 pass deflections.
