Robert W. Peters


EAST NEW MARKET — Robert W. Peters (Bob) of East New Market passed away April 8, 2021 after a long battle with cancer at the age of 90, in his home surrounded by his wife Bonnie and family.

He was born on July 13, 1930 in Cambridge to Ralph Peters and Ruth Lowe Peters. He was educated in the Dorchester County School System. He served four years in the US Navy, served as Commander of the Cambridge VFW two terms, and District Commander for two years achieving the highest honor of All American District Commander. He also served on the Cambridge Democratic Central Committee and was the first Vice Chairman for the 1st Congressio­nal District. He served as the Mayor of Secretary for approximat­ely twenty years and he was a member of the Gideon’s where he served as President for three years. At the time of his death Bob was an active member of First United Methodist Church where he served as Lay Leader. He spent the majority of his life as the owner and operator of Bob Peters Sales and more recently of B&B Flooring before retiring at the age of 88.

He is survived by his wife of forty seven years Bonnie Saunders Peters who he married on December 31, 1974 as well as siblings Madeline Parker, Joan Johnson, and Sidney Peters; his children Carolyn Peters Elzey (Kent) of East New Market, Beverly Peters Beever (Jeffrey) of Hampstead, NC, Lisa Hurley Windsor (Robert) of Secretary and Robert Hurley of Cambridge; seven grandchild­ren Scott Elzey, Stephanie Elzey, Ryan Elzey, Lisa Beever (Derek), BJ Windsor (Brandi), Ronnie Windsor (Whitney) and Katie Bloodswort­h (Shane, as well as eight greatgrand­children and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Doretha Lee Peters, brother Donald (Duck) Peters, his in-laws Norris (Dude) and Louise Saunders, son Ronnie Hurley, grandchild­ren Mary Beth Brennaman and Robert Hurley, Jr.

Bob enjoyed the majority of his years dedicated to his business, working side by side with the love of his life, Bonnie. His other hobbies included traveling, gardening, and his involvemen­t with his church community and spending time with his family.

Pallbearer­s will be Kent Elzey, Scott Elzey, Ryan Peters, Robert Hurley, Bob Windsor and Ronnie Windsor. Honorary pallbearer­s will be Wayne Saunders, Ryan Elzey, Jeffrey Beever, BJ Windsor, Greg Lutz and Ron Bell.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April

13, 2021 at 1:00PM at First United Methodist Church in Secretary, with a viewing from

12:00PM to 1:00PM. We ask that you be respectful of others by wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. Interment will be at East New Market Cemetery immediatel­y following the service.

Arrangemen­ts are in the care of Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market.
