For the record

Sunday Star - - LOCAL -

A photo caption on the front page of the Friday, Jan. 11, 2018, edition of The Star Democrat should have read: The State Highway Administration’s dome on Ocean Gateway in Easton, filled with salt, which is used to treat roads, is pictured on Thursday, Jan. 10.

The caption as printed indicated the salt “is used to dethaw roads during winter events.”

The use of the non-standard word dethaw (to thaw or unfreeze and possibly the conjoining of defrost and thaw) was confusing. And technically roads are not thawed. Salt is used to de-ice roads after a snowfall; salt brine is used before a snowfall as an anti-icing measure.

We apologize for the error.
