STEVENSVILLE — After struggling for three quarters to score points Friday evening against the Buccaneers’ defense, Queen Anne’s County High’s girls’ basketball team found its touch in the fourth.

Shannon Donovan drained two 3-pointers and Jurnee Wilson and Brooke Gordan each added one in the fourth quarter, as the Lions earned a 43-37 victory over host Kent Island.

Queen Anne’s improved to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in the North Bayside, staying on course for a potential pivotal second meeting against unbeaten division-leading Easton scheduled for Jan. 24, although there’s still plenty of basketball to play. Easton topped Queen Anne’s 47-41 on Dec. 18.

Kent Island had one divisional loss entering the game and fell to 4-5, 4-2.

Kendall Moxey scored a team-high 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Lions. Makenzy Hudock added nine points and Jiyah Hollis netted six to go along with

11 rebounds.

Jordan Grard scored a game-high 19 points for the Bucs.

Kent Island led 27-26 at the end of three quarters before an 8-0 run put the Lions ahead to stay. Moxey scored inside off a feed from Gordan for a 28-27 Queen Anne’s lead. After turnovers by both teams, Gordan canned a trey from the right side to make it

31-27. Seconds later, she collected a defensive rebound that led to a transition 3-pointer by Donovan for a 34-27 advantage. Kent Island later closed within 36-34 on a layup by Grard after a tip away by Lily Dixon

with 4 minutes, 10 seconds remaining, but Donovan popped a trey from the right side to put the Lions up 3934.

With 3:12 remaining, Wilson hit her 3-pointer to make it 42-34. Both teams’ defenses then took over again. Queen Anne’s final point came via a free throw by Hudock with 9.4 seconds left.

“Anytime you play Kent Island, it’s going to be a battle and it was tonight,” Lions head coach Mike Kern said. “I give them a lot of credit. They played hard. They played well. Holding us to 16 points in the first half, that was good. We’ve been scoring a lot and I was

shocked that we could only get 16 against them in first half.”

Neither team shot well from the free-throw line. Queen Anne’s went 4-for-14 while Kent Island was 4-for16.

The largest lead in the first half was five points at three times, all by the Lions:

13-8, 15-10, and 19-14. Hudock was bumped hard but maintained her balance and sank a 12-foot jumper off a pass from Donovan to cut Kent Island’s lead to 1916 at the half. Hollis scored after grabbing an offensive rebound and Moxey hit a pair of free throws to put the Lions ahead 20-19 with 5:50 left in the third quarter.

The game stayed close the rest of the third. Ashley Rotert stole the ball and fed Grard who scored with a transition one-hander for a

27-26 Kent Island at the end of the third.

Queen Anne’s then put together a 16-point fourth quarter for the victory.

“We had four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter,” Kern said. “We had such an advantage I’d thought we’d go inside, but they did such a good job doubling down on us, and so we kicked it out and we were fortunate enough to hit like three in a row to get us over the top. The biggest thing tonight is, we need to close things out making foul shots.”

Wilson contributed five offensive rebounds, two steals, and four assists for Queen Anne’s. Donovan, who scored eight points, collected four rebounds, four steals, and four assists.
