Hornets win big, visit SC on Sat.

- BY RON HOWELL Sports Editor

Highland won big in its football game Monday at Bronte as the Hornets stung the Longhorns, 58-6.

Highland’s next stop will be much tougher — a trip to No. 1 Sterling City at 1 p.m. Saturday. Sound familiar?

The Hornets will be facing their second No. 1 team in three weeks. Highland — 6-3 overall, 2-1 in District 8-1A DI — on Oct. 9 faced the No. 1 six-man football team in Texas for the first time by hosting Westbrook to open District 8-1A play and Highland lost, 48-16.

But the top spot in the polls moved to Sterling City after its 38-28 win Friday at Westbrook, which fell to No. 3. Highland will get its shot at the Eagles (8-0, 2-0) next after beating Bronte, and may need a victory at Sterling City in Saturday’s final regular season contest to make the playoffs which start in two weeks.

The Hornets needed just two quarters to dispose of Bronte (1-7 season, 0-3 in district) by the 45-point mercy rule. Jacob Hamilton ran for four touchdowns and Seth Garrett had three TD passes as Highland kept its playoff hopes alive. The Hornets led 30-0 after the first period and added 28 more points until the game was called at halftime.

Of Highland’s six wins this season, five of them have been by 44 or more points including both wins in district play.

Hamilton had 132 yards rushing on seven carries with TDs of 9, 14, 49 and 9 yards. He was one of three Hornets with TD catches as he caught a 16-yard throw by Garrett, who also completed a 35-yard TD to Nate Bennett and a 32-yarder to Kreed Turney. The final score by the Hornets came on a 22-yard fumble return by Turney.

Garrett completed 5 of 9 pass attempts for 98 yards without an interception, and also was successful on five PATs. Turney had five tackles and three assists to go with his fumble return.
