What’s That Smell?

In the past few days, I suppose you have turned on the heater in your house for the first time in a while. We can always tell that it has been sitting there all summer and into the fall by the smell that comes out. When we first turn it on in our house, one of the kids has always come out of their room asking, “What’s that Smell?”

As I understand it, that smell comes from dust settling in on the heating coils all summer. Then, when the heat gets turned on for the first time, there is a burning of that dust that causes that smell. It usually doesn’t last that long, but it is certainly noticeable, or we just get used to it.

In thinking about this for a bit, I realized that our lives can be the same way. After a period of time, the dust of sin can begin to accumulate. Then, when the heat of life’s trials get turned up, all kinds of stinky things begin to happen. We get bitter. We get irritable. We get angry. Overall, our attitude toward life and other people in our lives really stinks!

I believe there are times when God uses those trials in an attempt to burn off some of that dirt/sin that has built up. It is His way of burning off dirt so that we can run (for Him) more efficiently.

Of course, we know that the best way to live our lives as believers in Jesus is to continually be clean. We stay this way when we listen to the Holy Spirit as He convicts us each time we sin. Through that conviction, we should have a desire not to get dirty (or sin) in that manner again. Our sin should break our heart and bring us to a place where we do not want it to happen again. So, we “Confess our sins” knowing that God is “Faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” 1 John 1:9.

In this way, we are able to be used by God to do great things. And, we are able to run much more efficiently. Most importantly, our lives won’t stink!

We have exciting things going on at Broadway Baptist. We would love to have you visit and see what God is doing here! Our services are live in the sanctuary and we broadcast our Sunday Morning Worship time and our Sunday evening services through FB Live and YouTube Live.
