BROADWAY BAPTIST CHURCH

Purpose and Perspective

While reading the Scriptures this past week, I came upon a few verses in the first chapter of Philippians that really stuck out to me. Particularly, Philippians 1:12 which says, “I would that you should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have FALLEN OUT rather unto the furtherance of the gospel.” FALLEN OUT means the things in life that “come and go.” Realizing that Paul is writing this letter from a Roman prison makes these words all the more enlightening.

As I thought about what he wrote and his current situation, I could not help but be challenged. Much too often I complain or get disgusted with my present circumstances. Yet, when I read this, I get help on a couple of levels.

-I realize that present circumstances “come and go.” One of my favorite phrases in the Bible is “and it came to pass.” This helps my perspective.

-Then, I realize, in Paul’s writing, that he is encouraging me to know that God has a purpose for all things. The all things include my present circumstance.

It was Paul who also wrote, “And we know that ALL THINGS work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to HIS PURPOSE.” He realized what I need to realize. God has a purpose in ALL THINGS. That perspective helps me. I may not know exactly what that purpose is today, but I have the promise from God that it is all working together FOR MY GOOD. That good may happen today, or it may happen in the tomorrows to come. I’ll just keep trusting and believing God for His promise to me.

How about you? Do you, like me, get disillusioned far too often with life’s circumstances? Today, I hope you will gain some perspective and encouragement.
