SW wins at home and at Monahans

The new year for both Sweetwater teams got off to a good start Tuesday on the basketball court as the girls won on the road and the boys at home vs. Monahans.

The boys got their 10th straight win, 68-31, while the girls beat Monahans by a score of 41-32 in their final non-district game.

The girls hosted Estacado to start 5-4A play Friday.

The boys (16-6 overall) led 20-7 after one period, and the Mustangs were up 42-13 and 56-26 and the end of the second and third quarters, respective­ly.

Sweetwater coasted after a 14-0 run in the second quarter with four 3-pointers, two of them by Tate Thompson, that stretched its lead to 39-12. Another 3 by Malik Brown at the halftime buzzer made it 42-13.

Thompson had 19 points and Brown added 18 to lead Sweetwater, whose last loss was against Hereford at the Graham tournament nearly one month ago. The team hosted Jayton in its final non-district game Friday and the Mustangs will then be idle until this Friday, when Sweetwater travels to Levelland to start district.

The Sweetwater girls got back within a game of .500 with Tuesday’s road win at Monahans.

The Lady Mustangs, who had dropped three straight, led by three, 18-15, after the first quarter and maintained that edge (18-15) at halftime before increasing the lead to 30-25 at the end of the third period and winning the fourth quarter 11-7.

The Lady Mustangs were led by Jenika Fuentes’ 13 points which included three 3-pointers, followed closely by Aunisti Griffin, with 12 points. Toreyna Saddler added nine for Sweetwater as it upped its mark to 11-12 for the season.
