SW ends Classic with loss to Bangs
Sweetwater led Bangs 4-1 after two innings Saturday in its third and final game of the Rattlesnake Classic Baseball Tournament.
But the Mustangs couldn’t hold off a Bangs rally, as the Dragons scored two runs in the third inning, then added runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 5-4 win. The game ended by the tournament time limit after six innings.
Sweetwater tied the game at 1-1 when the Mustangs’ Jadyn Forbes hit a leadoff triple and came home on a Jade Rodriguez sac fly in the first, and added three runs in the second, aided by a pair of Bangs errors that gave Sweetwater the lead. Chris Gomez led off with a walk and scored after Blaine Bohall reached on an error.
Forbes singled to bring in Bohall and he scored when Rodriguez reached base on a Bangs outfield error.
The Dragons tied it in the fifth, and the game-winning run came on a two-out walk and RBI double in the top of the sixth inning.
Sweetwater got the tying run to second on a Gomez walk and sacrifice, but he was thrown out trying to steal third for the final out.
THURSDAY
Merkel 7, Sweetwater 0
Sweetwater had just two hits and had eight errors in its tournament opener with Merkel, which scored twice in the first inning, once in the fourth and fifth and three times in the seventh.
Tate Thompson threw all seven innings for Sweetwater, allowing just four hits and three earned runs.
FRIDAY
Jim Ned 12, Sweetwater 4
Jim Ned got three runs in each of the first two innings, five more in the third and one in the fourth inning of Friday’s game and finished with 15 hits in all.
Sweetwater scored once in the first and third innings and had two runs in the fourth until the tournament run rule went into effect.
Jade Rodriguez finished with two hits and Daniel Rodriguez had two RBIs and Jade Rodriguez one. Sweetwater hosts Seminole on Tuesday, and Thursday begins play at a three-day tournament at Greenwood.
