NO. 1 HALEP BOUNCED OUT OF WTA FINALS; GARCIA ADVANCES
SINGAPORE — Caroline Garcia advanced to the semifinals at the WTA Finals on Friday when top-ranked Simona Halep was beaten by Elina Svitolina.
Garcia defeated Caroline Wozniacki 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the early Red Group match, giving both 2-1 records. Wozniacki had already advanced, but Garcia had to wait. When Svitolina beat Halep 6-3, 6-4 later in the day, Halep was eliminated and Garcia was through as the group winner.
In the semifinals, Garcia plays Venus Williams and Wozniacki faces Karolina Pliskova.
Garcia, playing at a careerhigh No. 8 ranking after winning back-to-back titles in Wuhan, China, and Beijing, is the only one of the eight players in the Finals who didn’t have a chance to end the season with the top ranking.
SWISS INDOORS: Top-seeded RogerFederer was tested before beating No. 7 Adrian Mannarino 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals at Basel. In the semifinals, Federer plays unseeded David Goffin, a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 winner over fifth-seeded American Jack Sock . No. 2 Marin Cilic and No. 4 Juan Martin del Potro meet in the other semifinal. Cilic, the defending champ, beat qualifier Marton Fucsovics 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 7-6 (7-4). Del Potro got a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win against sixth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut.
